CIM/CON 494 Temporary Structures and Reinforcement Methods - FALL 2012 Elective

The course will include a discussion of the materials and their properties used in formwork design and construction as well as passive reinforcement methods such as reinforcing steel, and active methods of reinforcement such as prestressing.

Formwork and reinforcing are two items that play a critical role in the design and construction of temporary structures needed to construct any concrete element.  Proper formwork selection, design, and execution will be explored, along with the principle and theories behind concrete reinforcing.  The use of steel reinforcing will be examined in concrete buildings, bridge structures, and containment vessels.

The increasing use of prestressed reinforcement will be examined, including precast, pretension elements, and site-cast post-tensioned elements. Proper detailing of formwork and reinforcing will be covered, along with safe execution techniques.  This course will also explore the emerging trends in concrete formwork and reinforcing that have resulted in improved economies of scale, faster construction cycles, and taller structures.

Thesis Defense - Ankit Bansal–12 April 2012

Ankit Bansal will defend his thesis entitled: A Comparison of Public-Private Partnerships and Traditional Procurement Methods in North American Highway Construction. 12 April at 8:00 am in the Urban Systems Engineering (USE) room 257- Arizona State University, Tempe Campus.

Abstract:

The number of publicprivate partnership (P3) projects in North America increased
significantly since early 1990s, as policymakers and transportation officials seek
alternative methods to supplement traditional funding sources to finance and deliver
projects. Scholars have compared the cost and schedule overruns of P3 projects against
publicly funded projects in mature P3 markets in Europe, but similar comparisons are
lacking for the North American market. This paper begins filling that gap by comparing
the cost and scheduleoverrun results of 12 completed, largescale (greater than ~US$90
million) P3 highway projects in North America with previous research studies reporting
on largescale designbidbuild or designbuild highway projects. The researchers
collected P3 project performance data through interviews with project executives and
then utilized findings from previous studies of traditional projects for comparative
benchmarking data. The research results indicate the P3 sample cost overruns averaged
0.81% and schedule overruns averaged 0.30%, compared with 1.49% cost overruns and
11.04% schedule overruns for designbuild projects and 12.71% cost overruns and 4.34%
schedule overruns for publicly financed largescale designbidbuild highway projects.
With a relatively small universe of completed construction phase efforts to examine, it is
premature to draw explicit conclusions, yet the results reported in this study point to
tighter control of highway construction costs and delivery schedules when projects are
delivered via the P3 method. Findings from this study provide empirical evidence for
various theoretical advantages and limitations of P3 projects, as well as serve as a
reference tool to compare the appropriateness of different project delivery methods.

DEWSC teams perform well at the 2012 ASC Reno Competition

I wanted to pass on a couple of emails from Dr. Wiezel and Dr. Knutson over the weekend about the ASC Reno Competition that took place last week.

ASU had a GREAT showing in this year’s Reno Competition, taking home trophies in 5 of the 7 problem categories that we competed in. A big THANK YOU for all the support you and your companies have given to our Reno teams! Your financial help made the attending of the competition possible and the hours upon hours spent by your experts in preparing our students made the teams highly competitive. Also, special thanks go to our three lecturers, Aaron Cohen, Kraig Knudson and Edwin Weaver, who shared the load of guiding the teams. They are a terrific part of our faculty.

The results of our students at the Reno competition:

The Design Build team took 1st place!

Our Commercial Team, our Concrete Team and our Building Information Modeling (BIM) team took 2nd place in their respective categories and our LEED team took 3rd place.

Other noteworthy accomplishments were that William Fugett participated on the team that took 1st Place in the Alternate problem category.  (Competing teams are comprised of 6 members and many of the teams carry an alternate team member.  This year, teams alternate members had the opportunity to form teams with other alternates from various schools and compete in a special problem category.  Over 150 students formed 20 teams for this problem category and William was a member of the team that took first place).

Also, while our BIM team took second place, the problem sponsor judges (Webcor) recognized one specific team member, John Safstrom, and awarded him outstanding performance award accompanied by an internship/job offer for this upcoming summer.

Finally, Kim Rahberger of the 2nd place Concrete team was given a special recognition award for the outstanding work she did on the safety portion of their project.

Every one of our teams performed exceptionally well this year and truly outdid themselves.  We’ve officially outgrown our trophy cabinet in the current building (USE).

- Note received from Dr. Avi Wiezel, Interim Chair of the the Del E. Webb School of Construction - 2/12/2012

There are a couple of others who deserve a BIG thank you from DEWSC for their support of the Reno Teams!

Jason Madison, LEED® AP, Gilbane Building Company is a DEWSC alumni who was on three ASU Design-Build National Championship teams. Jason volunteered many hours working with the Reno Teams this year.

Tom Fujibayashi (SSEBE IT/computer expert) was a great resource with both hardware and software support for the Reno Teams.

- Note received from Dr. Kraig Knutson - 2/12/2012

List of Accredited Undergraduate Construction Education Programs in the United States

I recently put together a list of all the undergraduate construction education programs in the United States.  I thought others might be interested in the content.  The content was gathered from the websites of the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).   The degrees include Construction Science, Construction Technology and Construction Engineering.  The data collection date was 1/31/2012.  Fields included in the Excel file are  Accreditation, City, State, Zip Code, Leader, Status (ACCE lists Candidates), Degree and Website.

ABET does not disclose as many details about the accredited programs so I had to manually track down the ABET and ABET-TAC programs, which was not easy.  Some of the websites were really hard to navigate and to identify the leader of the accredited program.  You will see that some programs were undiscoverable and are listed as “unknown”.
