I wanted to pass on a couple of emails from Dr. Wiezel and Dr. Knutson over the weekend about the ASC Reno Competition that took place last week.
ASU had a GREAT showing in this year’s Reno Competition, taking home trophies in 5 of the 7 problem categories that we competed in. A big THANK YOU for all the support you and your companies have given to our Reno teams! Your financial help made the attending of the competition possible and the hours upon hours spent by your experts in preparing our students made the teams highly competitive. Also, special thanks go to our three lecturers, Aaron Cohen, Kraig Knudson and Edwin Weaver, who shared the load of guiding the teams. They are a terrific part of our faculty.
The results of our students at the Reno competition:
The Design Build team took 1st place!
Our Commercial Team, our Concrete Team and our Building Information Modeling (BIM) team took 2nd place in their respective categories and our LEED team took 3rd place.
Other noteworthy accomplishments were that William Fugett participated on the team that took 1st Place in the Alternate problem category. (Competing teams are comprised of 6 members and many of the teams carry an alternate team member. This year, teams alternate members had the opportunity to form teams with other alternates from various schools and compete in a special problem category. Over 150 students formed 20 teams for this problem category and William was a member of the team that took first place).
Also, while our BIM team took second place, the problem sponsor judges (Webcor) recognized one specific team member, John Safstrom, and awarded him outstanding performance award accompanied by an internship/job offer for this upcoming summer.
Finally, Kim Rahberger of the 2nd place Concrete team was given a special recognition award for the outstanding work she did on the safety portion of their project.
Every one of our teams performed exceptionally well this year and truly outdid themselves. We’ve officially outgrown our trophy cabinet in the current building (USE).

There are a couple of others who deserve a BIG thank you from DEWSC for their support of the Reno Teams!
Jason Madison, LEED® AP, Gilbane Building Company is a DEWSC alumni who was on three ASU Design-Build National Championship teams. Jason volunteered many hours working with the Reno Teams this year.
Tom Fujibayashi (SSEBE IT/computer expert) was a great resource with both hardware and software support for the Reno Teams.
