SUMMARY

The Document Control Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the flow of construction documentation throughout the bidding and construction process.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Bidding Phase:

· Receives, tracks, and monitors bid documents using established document management procedures to register documents; maintain databases; and produce reports as required.

· Enters data and produces reports using MS Access.

· Processes solicitations, plans, and specs, as well as all amendments through all procedural steps in accordance with well-defined procedures and guidelines.

· Ensures that pre-established document control requirements (e.g., which document numbering system will be used) are satisfactorily met throughout the bidding of the project.

· Maintains an established data distribution system for the assigned project based upon project and department requirements.

· Initiates and replies to routine correspondence related to area of responsibility.

· Performs other duties commensurate with functional level and responsibilities.

Project Management Phase:

· Inputs documentation and transmittals into the owner's RMS system.

· Maintains updated Submittal Log, monitor the submittal schedule, and status.

· Inputs RFI's (Requests for Information).

· Receives, logs, and tracks plans and specifications as received, including all revisions.

· Distributes plans and specifications to contractor personnel as well as subcontractors.

· Maintains all hard copy files of project documentation.

· Maintains electronic copy files of project documentation.

· Works with superintendents, engineers, and administration as required.

· Works with Government’s representatives as required.

· Supports Construction Manager, Superintendents, and Construction Engineers with submittals, RFI's, drawings, specifications, and other project documents.

· Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Education

Bachelor Degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering is a plus.

Experience

· Six months or more experience working in a federal construction environment preferably in similar position with similar responsibilities.

· Accuracy in working with details is required.

· Knowledge of federal construction documents, including solicitations, plans, specs, and handling submittals.

· Knowledge of the construction bidding and project management process.

· Proven ability to manage time and work priorities to ensure the orderly flow of construction documentation throughout the bidding and construction process.

· Capable of communicating directly with estimating, engineering, and administrative staff.

· Proven proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Access, Excel, and Outlook. Proficiency in other construction industry standard software packages is a strong plus.

· Experience and proficiency in Primavera Expedition software is preferred.

· Ability to get along with engineers and superintendents needed.

Bechtel Presentation - Ivanpah Solar Project Tonight (11/10/2011)

The project manager for construction of one of the world’s largest solar energy installations will speak at ASU at 6 p.m. Nov. 10, hosted by the Del E. Webb School of Construction Management.

Paul Staszesky is overseeing construction of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System – a solar-thermal facility in California’s Mohave Desert. It’s expected to almost double the amount of commercial solar-thermal electricity produced in the United States. Susan McCullough (DEWSC alum) will also be in attendance.

You will note that there are only 10 respondents to this survey out of 114 that graduated last academic year. As part of the formal application for graduation, students must fill out the Graduating Student Survey Report. Toy Drive to Benefit the Children at Cardon Children’s Medical Center

Every day little ones at Cardon Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) are treated for illnesses ranging from mild asthma to terminal cancer. Often these ailments require painful and scary procedures, and for many of the children, the procedures that are meant to help them can be much worse than the illness itself. The care givers at CCMC try to help the children be comfortable with their stay in the hospital and recognize that part of their care includes nurturing the young patients during these times. At CCMC, children are provided with toys and games to help divert their attention away from their medical concerns. “A toy is a small thing, but it can go a long way in helping a child face a frightening situation through distraction and comfort.” said Sue Eaton, director of Child Life at CCMC.

CCMC opened in 2009, and because they are such a new facility they are in desperate need of donated toys, and other children’s items, to help ease their minds throughout their stay. This is where we, the students at ASU’s Del E. Webb School of Construction would like to challenge you, your company and co-workers, to join us in helping the children at CCMC.

This year we have been given the opportunity to help these young patients by collecting new, unwrapped toys that we will present to the children, and also help stock the medical center's Toy Closets for future patients at CCMC. We understand that many companies do toy drives and other charitable collections during the holidays, but this year we ask, if possible, that you team up with us to help this local medical facility that helps so many of our children in the valley.

At a date in December, we would like to extend an invitation to the employees of your company to join us in delivering the toys to the Cardon Children’s Medical Center. Please help us put a smile on these patients during this time of year.

The USGBC Student Group at ASU will be hosting a LEED Green Associate 10-week Study Session and will be opening these sessions to both students and professionals. The Welcome and Exam Cram Session will take place on a Saturday with the entire group collected as one. Sessions 2-8 will take place on different days, times, and locations to better suit the needs of those participating and will be an hour long each. This information will be posted shortly but will consist of afternoon and evening sessions. You may attend any of these sessions as long as you have attended all 10 sessions. More information on how these Study Sessions will structure will be given at the Welcome Session.

The Project Engineer is responsible for providing complete technical support to the Project Manager (PM) and project field staff as directed by the PM on construction projects. This generally includes complete project document management, interpreting construction documents and resolving trade conflicts, assisting PM with subcontract management, coordinating project schedule updates with entire project team, attending coordination meetings, and assisting PM with managing project budget. New ASU professorship answers call for more construction expertise

Beavers-Ames Chair holder will prepare students to help nation face infrastructure challenges

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University is ramping up support for students pursuing careers in the construction industry by establishing a professorship position to focus on teaching heavy civil construction and engineering.

An endowment for the Beavers-Ames Heavy Construction Chair has been started with a gift of $500,000 from the Beavers Charitable Trust and an additional $300,000 from the Ames family and associates.

The holder of the chair will have a leading role in developing a bachelor of science program in construction engineering, as well as strengthening the existing heavy construction emphasis in the Del E. Webb School of Construction Programs.

The programs are part of the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, one of ASU’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

The heavy construction industry typically includes builders of large projects such as major roads, bridges, tunnels, power transmission systems, water and waste systems, mass transit and related types of projects requiring the use of large construction machinery.

“We see a huge need for expertise in heavy construction to help the nation build new infrastructure and rebuild old infrastructure in the next two decades,” says G. Edward Gibson, director of the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment.

“Our country faces large challenges in providing adequate water, power and transportation in a sustainable manner,” Gibson says. “The new chair will provide us with a faculty member who focuses on the key elements of heavy construction critical to facing these challenges.”

Establishment of Beavers-Ames Chair will enable ASU to attract more high-caliber faculty and top-tier students into the construction management and engineering programs, he says.

The Beavers Charitable Trust is a nonprofit organization formed in 1977 that uses proceeds to support education and students seeking careers in the heavy construction industry.

The new chair position is named in of honor W.F. “Bill” Ames and Wink Ames, longtime advocates for the construction industry and education in Arizona and California.

Establishing the chair is among a series of efforts that ASU has implemented in recent years to bolster students’ preparation for careers in construction and engineering, and to recruit a diverse population of students.

Old School: 1967-68 Catalog Construction Degree Planning Chart

Found this chart the other day in a stack of items from Vern Hasting's old office. Seems that the undergrad program flow-charts have been used for quite a while. One of the noticeable changes is the hour requirement. The Arizona Board of Regents mandated about five years ago that all degrees must the be no more than 120 credit hours. Edd Gibson promoted to Director of School of Sustainable and the Built Environment

Edd's promotion was formally announced last week. The article with accolades is on the Fulton Schools of Engineering website at - http://engineering.asu.edu/news/gibson. Dr. Avi Wiezel was identified at the Interim Chair for the Del E. Webb School of Construction while they start a national search for the new Program Chair. Edd Gibson was the Program Chair for the DEWSC for 19 months before being promoted to the Director of SSEBE.

For those that may not be aware of the re-alignment of programs, The Del E. Webb School of Construction Programs is now under the School of Sustainable Engineering & the Built Environment along with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the newly formed Construction Engineering (ABET) program.

It is not uncommon for at least 50% of this employee’s time to be spent traveling and overseeing projects in various locations throughout the U.S. The Construction Project Manager will coordinate with various municipalities, design professionals, contractors, and other departments within the corporate structure to complete capital projects on time and within budget. Qualifications:

Multi-unit retail environment experience is a plus, and a 4 year degree in a construction related field is preferred. Candidate must possess the ability to travel to project sites located throughout the U.S. at least 50% of the time. Must be able to manage additional special capital projects as assigned, including but not limited to: remodel projects (major and minor), relocation projects, commercial facility expansion projects, and facilities management tasks. Good verbal and written communication skills are a must. Candidate needs to have proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, Word, etc.) and possess the ability to run meetings, conduct presentations, and approve necessary work in supervisor’s absence.

William "Bill" Badger retiring May 15, 2011

It was announced today that Dr. Bill Badger will be retiring at the end of the spring 2011 semester.

A little info about one my favorite mentors:

He received his PhD from Iowa State in Civil Engineering. From 1987 through 2004 he was the Director of the Del E. Webb School of Construction. During that time he transformed the construction program from a small regional program to one of national prominence. Prior to joining ASU Bill served a long and distinguished career in the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Dr. Badger was the “The Engineer” for the United States Military Academy from 1983-85, supervising the planning, engineering, construction, and maintenance of West Point.

As the Saint Paul District Engineer (1979-82), Colonel Badger was the contracting officer for the $40,000,000 Lock and Dam Number One restoration.

Prior to this he served Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and China in addition to several stateside tours.

Bill is a Registered Professional Engineer, State of Alabama.

His professional memberships include:

Minimum Requirements:
Education: BS or BA in Construction Management or equivalent in related field
Experience in purchasing or procurement related field, residential construction experience helpful; will consider a recent college graduate with a degree in Construction Management

Skill in: Most recent positions should demonstrate a proven record to manage and improve the quality of products and services for budgets in the $10 - $50M range. This position should demonstrate familiarity with the bidding, negotiating and contract awarding process for residential purchasing. Ability to work with the regional and national team to leverage spending and identify potential multi-division and region deals is critical. Specific experience with personal computers and corresponding productivity applications such as Excel, Work is required. Experience with AS400 is helpful.

Del E. Webb School of Construction to offer 4+1 Accelerated Degree

This program is designed to provide selected high-achieving ASU Construction undergraduate students with the opportunity to combine advanced undergraduate course work with graduate course work and accelerate graduate degree completion. The program is particularly suited for students with strong academic backgrounds who are motivated to pursue independent research. Participants will have an opportunity to work in a research environment and engage in theoretical and/or experimental work with faculty and doctoral student mentors. Students will be able to showcase their work at the Del E. Webb School of Construction Graduate Student Research Symposium and be eligible for travel grants to present their work at national conferences.

Students will be able to earn a B.S.-M.S. in five years by enrolling in up to nine credit hours of graduate-level course work taken during their senior year. Six of these credits will apply toward both the undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Students are considered undergraduates until all B.S. requirements have been met. Students will not be counted as an undergraduate and graduate student simultaneously. Upon receipt of the B.S., students must change their status from the integrated B.S.-M.S. to the graduate M.S. program. They will then be eligible for graduate teaching and research assistantships and related health insurance and tuition waivers.

Admission Requirements

A minimum of two semesters of full-time enrollment in Construction is required. Applications are normally submitted with two semesters remaining in the senior year (in the second semester of a student’s junior year).
A minimum of 75 credit hours of course work applicable to an ASU B.S. program with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or better must be completed before beginning the accelerated degree program.

Application Procedure

Students must apply for admission to the program through the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) and the ASU Graduate College by submitting an application form for the integrated programs in Construction. Interested students should meet with their academic advisor to learn more about the program and how to apply.

Applications must be accompanied by:
1. Application

3. Three letters of recommendation
4. Personal statement
5. Current resume
6. Official transcripts from all colleges attended (except ASU), unless course work has already been transferred to ASU
a. Student must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA in all ASU course work in order to apply to the accelerated program
7. A plan indicating the consenting faculty advisor and supervisory committee*
8. An integrated plan of study (iPOS) leading to the dual degrees (sample follows at end of document)

Note: the GRE is not a requirement for this degree.

*The advisor and supervisory committee will also comprise the master’s program committee and shall be composed of a minimum of three members from the ASU faculty with at least two being from SSEBE. A change of advisor requires approval of the school director.

Deadlines

Applications are reviewed twice each year and are due by Sept. 15 for the following spring semester and by Feb. 15 for the following fall semester.
Acceptance notices are sent prior to pre-registration in the semester of application.

Course Selection

The student, together with the faculty advisor, selects up to nine credit hours of 500-level courses to be taken prior to the B.S. graduation. Up to six credit hours of course work may be credited toward the M.S. program requirements. All courses must be taken at the ASU Tempe campus.

Texting and Generational Differences

This week NPR (Clash of the Ages)and The Wall Street Journal (Mind Your Blackberry) covered texting and generational perspectives of its relevance and use in the workplace. It reminded me of a discussion I had with a class this spring. During a lecture on etiquette one student explained that he was ostracized for typing on his phone during the weekly owner/contractor meeting. He was actually taking minutes for his boss, but the presence of the phone was suspect. My suggestion to the class was to get a travel-sized bluetooth keyboard and use your full set of hands. The boomers running the meeting will look at your activity as innovative rather than a distraction.

Baroness Perry of Southwark

As her Majesty’s Inspector in the Department for Education, Baroness Perry of Southwark worked with the OECD on projects in higher education and teacher education. In addition, she has participated on the EEC working group on teacher education, and was promoted Chief Inspector in 1981. She was appointed Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of South Bank University (formerly South Bank Polytechnic) in 1987. In 1994, she became President of Lucy Cavendish College, the University of Cambridge. From 2001 until 2006, she was Pro-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, and Chair of Council at the University of Roehampton. She is currently President of the Institute of Management, London, a position she took up in 2001.

Baroness Perry is an Honorary Fellow of Girton and Lucy Cavendish Colleges in Cambridge University; of Sunderland University; the College of Preceptors; the Royal Society of Arts; the Swedish Academy of Science; and the City and Guilds of London. She has been awarded seven honorary doctorates and eight honorary fellowships. She was made a Life Peer in 1991.

She is a graduate of Cambridge University where she studied philosophy at Girton College. She has lectured at the University of Manitoba, Canada, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Exeter, and Oxford University. She has published extensively on education issues having written four books, the most recent being The Womb in Which I Lay, a study of mother-daughter relationships. She is currently working on a book on aging.

In the March 2009 publication of AZRE Danial Pollack of Pollack Real Estate Investments provided his thoughts on the Arizona economic outlook for 2009. What caught my eyes was his assessment of the residential market. He said, "At large, people are changing their goals from having the largest home possible, at any cost, to having the the best possible quality of life. That means small homes within infill locations will be the most sought after in the residential markets for the foreseeable future".

Yet another comment in a string of news pieces from NPR, Washington Post, Arizona Republic, etc. regarding the changes going on in the marketplace. It will be interesting to see in the coming year which builders will capitalize on the smaller, efficient, greener home concept. Will it give them the competitive advantage they need to survive the financial crisis? Is this a temporary or permanent change for the home building industry?

The local chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) is announcing the application process for Fall Semester Student Scholarships. Applications are due April 17th. Last year, the national AEE awarded six Arizona college students $500 each. The local chapter awarded an additional $250 to each of these students.

Arizona Builders Alliance - White Paper from Industry Leaders Roundtable

I received a quick summary of a recent round-table discussion (January I believe) Arizona Builders Alliance had regarding what contractors should and should not be doing during the tough economic times. Here are some of the things that the group suggested:

1. What should contractors be doing right now?

Preserve cash, manage credit line
Use credit lines or they may be cancelled
Keep cash in places that are safe, federally guaranteed
Watch cash flow and collect your money
Know the margins in your projects; ease margins down but don’t work free
Cut overhead fast: GC’s evaluate every 3-6 months; more frequently for subs
Project worst case scenario and adjust overhead accordingly
Lower overhead now for what you expect it to be in the two-three years
Use a stair step approach in downsizing
Eliminate helicopters, boats, condos and other non-essential overload
Try and get securities in lieu of retention
Create “what if” plans; it makes you less emotional
Change plans quickly if necessary
Be ready when market comes back strong
Identify and keep your core staff
Communicate with key employees
Be mindful many employees have never been through this before
Expect more from remaining staff
Stay close to your customers; maintain marketing strength
Make it easy as possible to do business with
Look to emerging markets
If expanding geographically, do so with familiar work
Maintain and improve your key customer relationships
Consider going “dormant” if sole proprietor

2. What should contractors NOT be doing right now?

Don’t load up on cheap work; sacrifice volume for margin
Don’t keep mediocre employees
Don’t chase lots of directions at once (geographically or niches)
Don’t bank on cash flow to keep company going
Don’t take on work outside of your markets
Don’t hide from your employees
Don’t reduce training and education budgets

3. How can leaders foster positive attitudes within their employees?

Communicate company current status (be open about financials) even closely held
Be open and visible
Inform your people what you are doing
Encourage employees to ask questions
Let the employees know their role and responsibility
Emphasize employee actions will determine their security and that of the firm
Demonstrate how the company values apply to the situation
Remember external communication- banks, bonding companies, suppliers and owners
Be engaged in the solution
Be optimistic and realistic about the future
Plan with your employees; strategic plan and targets (necessary)
Upside: economic conditions are fostering positive attitudes among workers (sense of urgency, improved work ethic, and increased productivity)

4. What are the top skills necessary to survive and prosper?

Decisive-willingness to make tough decisions early
Focus on present and future; let go of the past
Objectively consider all alternatives

Interesting how the economy has backed up a lot of different processes in our lives. Prior to the economic slowdown there was an expectation that there would be a lot of faculty positions opening up as tenured faculty retired. Now that the economy has significantly reduced retirement funds many are opting to stay employed a little while longer. Much to the chagrin of recent Ph.D. grads there is little available as they come out of the pipeline.
